Tanzania Pushes Mining Sector to the Centre of Vision 2050

Tanzania is placing mining at the centre of Vision 2050, with government and industry leaders backing mineral exploration, policy stability and local participation as the foundation for long-term economic growth.

At a strategic meeting in Dodoma, the Ministry of Minerals and the Tanzania Chamber of Mines discussed industry growth and attracting investment. Minister for Minerals Anthony Mavunde emphasised that mineral exploration must be a national priority. He argued that no country can build a trillion-dollar economy without first investing in discovering and proving its resource base. He stressed that exploration starts the process for new investment, higher production, and stronger returns for the country.

The meeting also highlighted the need for closer cooperation between the government and the private sector. Both sides agreed to remove barriers that hinder industry growth. In addition, officials promised a tough approach to licence speculation and illegal encroachment. They also backed digital systems to improve transparency and strengthen licence management.

Another key issue was local participation. Discussions pointed to plans to expand local content through industrialisation, including the possibility of developing Buzwagi into a manufacturing hub linked to mining activity. Officials also stressed the need to protect Tanzanian participation across the mining value chain.

Deputy Minister Steven Kiruswa pointed out that rising global demand for critical and strategic minerals creates real opportunities for Tanzania. This trend is accelerating as the world embraces new technologies and cleaner energy systems.

Benjamin Mchwampaka, meanwhile, argued that stable policies and predictable regulations are essential for Tanzania to attract long-term, high-value investment.

Yahya Samamba also described efforts to build local skills in the Mineral Economy. These skills will help Tanzania respond quickly to global changes in the mining industry.

The overall message from the Dodoma engagement was clear: Tanzania must set clear rules, maintain steady policy direction, and invest in people and systems if it wants mining to drive economic transformation.
