Luxury Travel in Africa, Why the Continent Is Entering a Golden Era

Luxury travel in Africa is entering a powerful new phase. As international arrivals rise and high-end travellers seek personalised, ethical and unforgettable experiences, the continent is increasingly positioned as one of the world’s most attractive destinations for premium tourism.

Market Data Forecast’s 2025 Africa Travel Market Report states that Africa’s travel sector topped US$25.7 billion. The report projects steady growth of 5% per year through 2034.

High-end safari tourism is expanding even more rapidly. Grand View Research estimated Southern Africa’s safari-tourism segment at US$13.2 billion in 2024. The report predicts this could more than double by 2033, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.4%.

UN Tourism’s World Tourism Barometer shows more travellers are visiting Africa. In 2025, 81 million international visitors landed on the continent, an 8% increase over 2024. This number exceeded pre-pandemic levels by 16%. In February 2026, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called tourism a gem in his country’s crown, a sentiment echoed across Africa.

World Tourism Barometer data shows tourism contributed 6.8% of African GDP in 2023, up from 5.9% the previous year. The sector accounts for millions of jobs across the continent.

As tourist arrivals surpass pre-COVID levels across the continent, African countries are improving infrastructure, promoting traditional drawcards like safaris, beach destinations, and cultural heritage. They are also embracing niche trends such as astro-tourism in Namibia and sleepouts in the wild in Botswana and Zambia.

While mature markets like Europe struggle with overtourism and anti-visitor sentiment, African destinations face none of these issues. Tourism is seen as a driver of job creation, economic growth, and development.

The jewel in the crown of African tourism, to borrow Ramaphosa’s phrasing, is luxury travel. It generates significantly higher average spend per visitor than the norm, and its high-value, low-impact nature means that destinations can derive maximum benefit with minimal downside.

But luxury travel is not only about spending. “It’s important to grasp that, as it always has, luxury travel still involves exclusivity, luxurious comfort, personalised service and enhanced privacy options – but it’s becoming so much more than that,” says Clinton Els, Managing Executive of Your Africa, a new luxury travel brand.

“The latest trends in luxury travel worldwide show that this market’s growth is being driven by international tourists seeking memorable, one-of-a-kind experiences. They don’t just want to say that they went on a five-star journey, they want to be able to tell vivid stories about the singular, off-the-beaten-track adventure they had – the kind that not everyone gets to enjoy.”

Several exciting trends in luxury travel are emerging, including hyper-personalisation (holidays tailored to individual travellers); purposeful travel (slow-paced, immersive activities instead of rushed sightseeing); holistic wellness (trips promoting health and happiness); sustainable, ethical luxury (supporting environmental and cultural preservation); and exclusive access (fewer crowds and more access to hidden gems and novel experiences).

Sustainability and cultural preservation are vital aspects of the new luxury travel experience, Els continues: “Greater environmental awareness, and the desire to learn about and add value to the communities they encounter without negatively impacting their ways of life, are increasingly important to the conscious – and conscientious–traveller.

“They want it all: luxury and adventure, and they want to tread lightly on the Earth, too. For a brand such as ours, which curates highly personalised luxury journeys, that means partnering with other brands that are focused on sustainability, particularly in terms of renewable energy, water saving and waste management, and benefiting communities with their activities.”
