Kenya Rights Groups Demand Probe After Missing Protesters Found in Nairobi

Human rights organisations in Kenya have called for investigations after six protesters reported missing after recent demonstrations were found in different parts of Nairobi.

The individuals were reportedly arrested during events marking the 2024 anniversary of anti-government protests. Rights groups say contact with the six was lost after the Thursday arrests.

Amnesty International Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission said six had been located and were receiving medical attention.

The organisations said those found include Collins Ochieng, Muteti Mulinge, Michael Ngigi, Elisha Alam, Fredrick Ojiro and Christine Walubengo.

They allege that the six were mistreated while in custody, prompting calls for independent investigations. The allegations have not yet been independently verified.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission said Davis Lichuma remained unaccounted for as of Saturday and urged authorities to establish his whereabouts.

The developments follow nationwide demonstrations held to commemorate people who died during protests in 2024. Kenyan authorities reported hundreds of arrests during the latest protests.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said approximately 355 people were detained across the country during Thursday’s demonstrations.

Many of those arrested subsequently appeared before courts on Friday.

Human rights groups have called on oversight institutions, including the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, to examine the allegations and determine whether any laws or procedures were violated.

The case has renewed debate about policing, public demonstrations and accountability in Kenya, issues that have remained at the centre of public discussion following recent protests.

Authorities have not publicly responded in detail to the specific allegations raised by rights organisations. Investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the arrests, detentions and reported injuries.
