India-based renewable energy firm KP Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Botswana to develop large-scale renewable energy projects, marking a major step in the country’s push towards clean energy and net-zero emissions.
The agreement, signed with Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy, sets out plans to develop renewable power generation, energy storage and transmission infrastructure with a combined capacity of nearly five gigawatts. The projects are expected to involve an estimated investment of around US$4 billion.
The partnership supports Botswana’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030 and represents a significant expansion of KP Group’s international operations. The company operates through its subsidiaries KPI Green Energy Limited, KP Energy Limited and KP Green Engineering Limited.
The agreement follows a recent state visit to Botswana by Droupadi Murmu, highlighting growing cooperation between India and Botswana in clean energy and sustainable development.
Under the MoU, KP Group and the Government of Botswana will work together to roll out renewable energy projects and strengthen high-voltage transmission networks. The plans also include regional power interconnections aimed at improving electricity reliability and energy security.
As part of the deal, KP Group has committed to offering 30 scholarships each year to citizens of Botswana. The scholarships will support studies in renewable energy, engineering, sustainability and related fields, with the aim of building local skills and strengthening the country’s clean energy workforce.
Speaking on the agreement, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, said the partnership would help accelerate the country’s clean energy transition while delivering long-term economic and environmental benefits.
KP Group’s founder, Faruk G. Patel, said the agreement reflects a shared vision to unlock Botswana’s renewable energy potential and contribute meaningfully to its climate goals.
The signing of the MoU coincided with another milestone for the company, as Harsh Sanghavi virtually inaugurated KP Green Engineering’s new fabrication and galvanising facility in Matar, Gujarat. The facility adds close to 300,000 metric tonnes of annual production capacity, strengthening the company’s ability to support large-scale renewable and transmission projects.
KP Group currently manages a renewable energy portfolio of around six gigawatts in India and is targeting 10 gigawatts by 2030. The company is also expanding into areas such as green hydrogen, energy storage and advanced solar technologies.
