Senqu Bridge Opens as South Africa and Lesotho Mark LHWP Milestone

Lesotho and South Africa marked a significant milestone in their infrastructure partnership with the official opening of the Senqu Bridge in Mokhotlong.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, King Letsie III, and Lesotho Prime Minister Samuel Matekane attended the inauguration, part of Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. The bridge’s opening further strengthens cooperation between the two countries on this regionally significant project.

The new bridge replaces the existing crossing, which will be submerged when the Polihali Dam reservoir is filled. Its completion ensures continued access to Mokhotlong, Sani Pass, and surrounding areas as the broader project progresses.

The Lesotho Highlands Water Project remains one of the region’s most important joint infrastructure programmes. It is intended to strengthen water supply in South Africa, support Lesotho’s hydropower generation, and create wider economic benefits through improved access to water, irrigation, fisheries, and tourism.

Phase II is expected to significantly increase annual water transfers and enhance Lesotho’s electricity generation capacity. Officials view this as progress toward greater energy stability for Lesotho and stronger regional cooperation.

Constructed at an estimated cost of R2.4 billion, the Senqu Bridge is the largest of three major bridges over the Polihali Reservoir. At approximately 825 metres long and 90 metres high, it is expected to enhance transport and connectivity in the region.

Before the inauguration, South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, and Lesotho’s Minister of Natural Resources, Mohlomi Moleko, unveiled a tunnel boring machine that will drill the 38-kilometre tunnel connecting the Polihali and Katse reservoirs.

President Ramaphosa attended the event with Minister Majodina, Deputy Minister David Mahlobo, and Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Alvin Botes.
