Republic of Congo to Grant Visa-Free Entry to All Africans from January 2027

Brazaville: The Republic of Congo will grant visa-free entry to citizens of all African countries from 1 January 2027. The decision marks a major step towards greater African integration and easier travel across the continent.

President Denis Sassou N’Guesso announced the policy during Africa Day celebrations in Brazzaville. He urged African countries to embrace unity and remove barriers that limit cooperation. “From 1 January 2027, nationals of all African countries will no longer require a visa to enter Congo,” the president said.

The new policy places the Republic of Congo among a growing group of African nations promoting free movement. Countries such as Rwanda, Benin, Seychelles, The Gambia and Kenya have already introduced measures that make travel easier for African citizens.

President Sassou N’Guesso linked the decision to Africa’s broader development goals. He called on governments to accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He also renewed support for a single African passport and greater mobility across the continent.

The announcement came during the African Development Bank’s 2026 Annual Meetings in Brazzaville. Leaders, policymakers and development partners attended the gathering to discuss Africa’s economic future.

Many experts believe restrictive visa policies continue to slow economic growth. They argue that cumbersome travel requirements discourage trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchange. As a result, intra-African trade remains lower than in many other regions of the world.

The Republic of Congo hopes the new policy will change that. Easier travel could create opportunities for entrepreneurs, students, professionals and tourists. It could also strengthen family and cultural connections across borders.

The move supports the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision. The framework promotes a more integrated continent where people, goods and services move freely.

Authorities have not yet released detailed implementation guidelines. However, the government has confirmed that African citizens will no longer need visas before travelling to the country.

Analysts view the decision as a strong signal of Congo’s commitment to continental unity. They believe the policy could encourage other African countries to adopt similar measures.

If implemented successfully, the initiative could boost trade, tourism and investment. It could also bring Africa closer to its long-standing vision of seamless movement across the continent.
