Mozambique Studies Ethiopia Agricultural Transformation Model

Mozambique looks to Ethiopia’s agricultural transformation as a model for boosting food production, creating jobs, and improving livelihoods.

On 28 April 2026, Mozambican Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries Roberto Mito Albino led a delegation to agricultural development projects in Bishoftu, Oromia Regional State.

The visit explored Ethiopia’s progress in modern farming, food self-sufficiency, youth participation in agriculture, and private-sector investment. Minister Albino said Ethiopia’s achievements in agriculture offer important lessons for other African countries. He praised the scale of work and stressed that Mozambique wants to learn from Ethiopia’s experience.

Ethiopia’s approach, Albino noted, shows how agriculture can drive employment, investment, and household income. He said the progress he observed reflects strong efforts to reduce food imports and build a more productive farming sector.

The delegation was briefed by Dr Mandefro Nigussie, Director General of the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute. He said Ethiopia had made notable gains through cluster farming, which brings smallholder farmers together to improve productivity, access to inputs and market participation.

Dr Mandefro also highlighted the Bounty of Basket initiative, or Yelemat Tirufat. The programme expands production of dairy, poultry, eggs, honey, vegetables, and other high-value products. He said Ethiopia continues to invest in natural resource development as part of its wider plan to strengthen agriculture and support rural communities.

During the tour, the Mozambican delegation visited vegetable and fruit farms built by private investors and young entrepreneurs. They also visited facilities that produce export goods, dairy farms, poultry sites, and chick hatching centers.

The visit shows a growing interest in agricultural cooperation across Africa. Many governments now seek practical ways to increase food production, reduce imports, and create opportunities for young people.

Mozambique may find useful lessons in Ethiopia’s approach to linking policy, investment, and community participation. This visit shows the growing regional interest in its agricultural reforms and ongoing efforts to make farming a central pillar of economic development.
