Fine Spinners Uganda Targets DRC, Zambia and Ethiopia in $5m Expansion

Kampala, Uganda: September 29, 2026 – Fine Spinners Uganda Limited is targeting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia and Ethiopia as part of an African expansion strategy backed by a US$5 million investment in new textile machinery.

The company is financing the investment entirely through shareholder equity and retained earnings. No grants, subsidies or concessional loans are attached to the programme. The investment is expected to increase overall production capacity by up to 40 per cent.

The Bugolobi-based integrated textile manufacturer says the expansion will strengthen its ability to meet growing demand across Africa. It is also expected to open new opportunities in Japan and deepen the company’s presence in European markets.

Fine Spinners currently exports to Germany, Denmark, Spain, Gabon, South Sudan, Rwanda and Kenya, alongside serving the Ugandan market. DRC, Zambia and Ethiopia have been identified as its immediate new African markets.

A major upgrade across the company’s vertically integrated manufacturing operation will support the expansion. Its operations cover spinning, weaving, knitting, dyeing, finishing and sewing thread production.

“The new capacity gives us the ability to compete for larger orders and enter new markets while continuing to build on our integrated Ugandan manufacturing base. We see a greater potential in the DRC, Zambia and Ethiopia,” said Sav Bedi, Chief Executive Officer of Fine Spinners Uganda Limited.

Fine Spinners is also pursuing opportunities linked to Kenya’s Export Processing Zones (EPZs). Garment manufacturers operating within the zones produce for major US brands and use significant volumes of fabric imported from China and India.

Fine Spinners sees Kenya’s EPZ market as an opportunity to supply locally manufactured fabric into an established apparel export chain serving the United States.

Uganda’s exclusion from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) has changed Fine Spinners’ direct US export strategy. The company has redirected garment exports towards Europe and Japan while exploring indirect access to the US market through Kenyan garment manufacturers.

“Rather than relying on a single trade preference, our strategy is built around quality, vertical integration and the ability to supply customers with products from Ugandan cotton through to finished fabric and garments,” said Bedi.

Fine Spinners Uganda Limited is part of Bedi Investments Group, which has manufactured textiles in East Africa since 1972. Fine Spinners operates a vertically integrated manufacturing model covering spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing, finishing and garment production. Its products include cotton and industrial yarns, sewing threads, knitted and woven fabrics, and finished apparel.
