CAF Investigation Into the Al Ahly Fans After Champions League Incident

The CAF investigation into the Al Ahly fans has officially begun following incidents during the CAF Champions League clash against AS FAR on Sunday.

The Confederation of African Football opened disciplinary proceedings after crowd trouble overshadowed the Group B encounter in Cairo. The match ended 0-0, but tensions escalated during the game. Al Ahly and AS FAR both secured qualification for the knockout stage. However, the off-field incidents have now taken centre stage.

Al Ahly finished top of Group B. AS FAR advanced in second place. Reports indicate that sections of Al Ahly supporters threw water bottles at AS FAR players and technical staff as they headed toward the tunnel at half-time.

Other reports suggested similar behaviour toward Moroccan supporters inside the stadium. AS FAR responded quickly. The club released a statement condemning the conduct and confirmed it had contacted CAF. That complaint triggered the CAF investigation into the Al Ahly fans.

“The Royal Army Club administration strongly condemns the unsportsmanlike conduct of some Al Ahly fans, specifically the throwing of bottles, which posed a direct threat to the safety of the players and technical staff,” the Moroccan club stated.

“The administration confirms that it has initiated the necessary procedures by contacting the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to demand the application of the sanctions stipulated in the applicable regulations, in order to uphold the principles of sportsmanship and ensure the safety of all involved.”

CAF issued its own statement on Monday. The governing body condemned the incidents and confirmed that it had referred the matter to its Disciplinary Board.

“The Confédération Africaine de Football (‘CAF’) strongly condemns the unacceptable incidents which took place during the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League fixture between Al Ahly of Egypt and AS FAR of Morocco in Cairo on Sunday, 15 February 2026,” CAF said.

“CAF has referred the matter to the Disciplinary Board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken against those proven responsible.”

The disciplinary process will now determine whether sanctions are imposed. CAF previously punished AS FAR for similar incidents during the reverse fixture in November. The Moroccan club received a two-match stadium ban and a $100,000 fine.

As a result, AS FAR played two home Champions League matches behind closed doors. Observers expect Al Ahly could face comparable penalties if found responsible. The outcome of the CAF investigation into the Al Ahly fans may affect stadium attendance in upcoming knockout fixtures.

Meanwhile, CAF conducted the knockout stage draw. Mamelodi Sundowns will face Stade Malien. Al Ahly renew their rivalry with Tunisia’s Esperance. AS FAR meet defending champions Pyramids. RS Berkane take on Al Hilal.

In the Confederation Cup, Al Masry host CR Belouizdad. OC Safi face Wydad AC. AS Otoho meet Zamalek. AS Maniema clash with USM Alger.

With the knockout stage approaching, attention now shifts to the disciplinary outcome of the CAF investigation into the Al Ahly fans.
