Ethiopian Airlines Orders Six More Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners

Ethiopian Airlines is advancing its long-haul expansion strategy and has confirmed an order for six additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. This move highlights the carrier’s preparations for the next phase of international growth.

The airline had previously secured options for these new aircraft in an earlier agreement. By converting these options into firm orders, Ethiopian Airlines now commits to 26 recent 787s. Deliveries will begin in 2028.

This order follows Ethiopian Airlines’ January 2026 agreement for nine 787-9s and 11 Boeing 737 MAX jets. The airline is pursuing expansion, not just refreshing its fleet. Its strategy focuses on large-scale operations.

For Africa’s largest airline, this development is significant for several reasons. First, it provides Ethiopian Airlines with greater capacity to expand its intercontinental network from Addis Ababa, a key aviation hub in Africa. The airline has stated that the additional aircraft will facilitate growth on both established and underserved long-haul routes and enhance cargo capacity in response to rising international demand.

Second, the order strengthens Ethiopian Airlines’ position as Africa’s leading 787 operator. The airline has made the Dreamliner a central part of its long-haul strategy for years. This latest order shows sustained confidence in the aircraft as the foundation of its international operations.

Ethiopian Airlines Group chief executive Mesfin Tasew characterized the order as further evidence of the carrier’s positive trajectory. “Converting the options of six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aeroplanes into a firm order is truly a proud moment for us,” he stated. “The order shows Ethiopian Airlines’ sustainable growth and preparation for further achievements. Growing our fleet size with ultra-modern aeroplanes such as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, we are further maintaining operational excellence and passengers’ comfort.”

The agreement also benefits Boeing, which is working to stabilize production and restore momentum in aircraft deliveries. Ethiopian Airlines remains one of the American manufacturer’s most important African customers.

Officials from the Trump administration attended the signing at Boeing’s headquarters near Washington. According to Reuters, the event also reflected a broader United States focus on increasing exports and supporting major industrial agreements.

Many African carriers continue to face challenges with fleet renewal, financial constraints, and limited long-haul capabilities. In contrast, Ethiopian Airlines is expanding with confidence. The airline expects that future growth in global travel, cargo demand, and African connectivity will reward carriers who invest early in efficient widebody capacity.

That is a bold bet. But it is one Ethiopian has made for years. With six more Dreamliners secured, the airline shows it intends to stay at the forefront of African aviation, not only in size but also in reach.
