German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have opened their first football academy on the African continent with the launch of a new youth development centre in Ghana.
The club confirmed the move through its official media channels and said the BVB International Academy Ghana will open later this month.
The academy is based at Achimota School in Accra and was established in partnership with Accra Shooting Stars FC. It will offer structured football training to boys and girls aged between six and 18.
According to Dortmund, the project marks a major step in strengthening youth football development in West Africa. It also reflects the club’s long-term commitment to nurturing talent beyond Europe.
Importantly, the academy will follow Borussia Dortmund’s established BVB training methodology. This approach places strong emphasis on technical skills, discipline and leadership.
In addition, the programme integrates education, nutrition and personal development. The club says this structure aims to develop well-rounded players, not just footballers.
Former Ghana international and ex-Dortmund midfielder Ibrahim Tanko will serve as an ambassador for the academy. He believes the initiative can unlock Ghana’s vast youth talent.
“Bringing the BVB philosophy to Ghana is very special,” Tanko said. “This country has incredible passion for football. Through this academy, young players can develop the mindset and discipline needed to succeed.”
Meanwhile, the Ghana academy joins Borussia Dortmund’s expanding international academy network. The club already operates similar programmes in the United States, the Caribbean and Spain.
As a result, Dortmund continues to strengthen its global footprint while supporting grassroots football development in emerging markets.
The club said the Ghana project highlights Africa’s growing importance in world football and signals its belief in the continent’s next generation of players.
