Nigeria: Flutterwave and Anambra Partner to Expand Digital Commerce for SMEs

Flutterwave and the Anambra State Government launched a new partnership to strengthen the state’s digital economy. Together, they aim to provide local businesses with better tools to grow.

The agreement will support small and medium-sized enterprises across Anambra by expanding access to digital payment systems. It also aims to widen participation in e-commerce and help traders reach customers beyond Nigeria’s borders. This move draws fresh attention to a state already known for its strong business culture and high trading activity.

Anambra stands out as one of Nigeria’s major commercial centres. Markets like Onitsha Main Market have made the state a powerful trading hub. Thousands of entrepreneurs drive economic activity across cities and towns, including Awka and Nnewi. However, many businesses still operate outside formal digital systems. This limits their ability to scale efficiently. The new collaboration aims to close that gap.

Flutterwave will provide a range of business tools to help traders and business owners accept electronic payments. These tools will also help them track income more effectively and build a stronger presence in digital commerce. The offerings include payment links, invoicing systems, online storefronts, marketplace features, and point-of-sale integrations. In addition, Flutterwave will work with the state government to bring more SMEs onto its platform. Their wider goal is to improve formalisation across the state.

Some business operators say Flutterwave’s infrastructure already delivers results. Dr. Stanley Uzochukwu, Chairman of Stanel Group and The Delborough Hotel, said Flutterwave’s systems boosted his business revenue and made payments to international suppliers much easier.

The partnership comes as Nigeria’s e-commerce market is set to grow rapidly over the next few years. For Anambra, whose economy relies on physical trading networks, this shift offers a chance to gain a stronger foothold in online commerce. Officials believe digital tools will help traders serve customers across Nigeria and in foreign markets. These tools will also give businesses more efficient ways to manage operations.

Flutterwave’s Send App will also play a role by enabling Anambra businesses to receive payments from customers and partners abroad, including in the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe. The service can strengthen links with the diaspora by making it easier for people outside Nigeria to support businesses back home.

Flutterwave Founder and Chief Executive Officer Olugbenga Agboola said, “We believe entrepreneurs in Anambra deserve access to the same financial infrastructure found in major business centres worldwide.” He described the initiative as a practical step to help local businesses grow, trade internationally, and build long-term wealth.

The Anambra State Government welcomed the deal as an important step toward positioning the state as a leading destination for digital commerce in Nigeria. Officials plan to announce rollout dates and SME onboarding programmes in the coming weeks.
