Morocco Casablanca Airport Goes Fully Digital as AFCON 2025 Travel Surge

Morocco has introduced a fully digital passenger journey at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca as it prepares for a sharp rise in travel linked to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025).

The new system, launched by the National Airports Office (ONDA), is designed to ease congestion, shorten waiting times and make travel smoother for thousands of supporters expected to pass through the airport during the tournament.

Digital and biometric technologies now handle much of the passenger process. In Terminal 1, Royal Air Maroc travellers can use newly installed self-service bag drop kiosks, allowing them to check in and hand over their luggage without queuing at counters. Terminal 2 has also been upgraded with self-service check-in machines for passengers travelling with hand luggage only, enabling them to move directly to security and boarding areas.

Several airlines, including Air Arabia, Saudia and EgyptAir, have already connected their systems to the platform, allowing a wider range of passengers to benefit from the faster, automated process.

The changes come at a time of unusually high traffic at Morocco’s busiest airport. Between 8 and 18 December, Mohammed V International Airport handled more than 292,000 passengers, accounting for more than a third of all air travel in the country during that period. The figures highlight Casablanca’s central role as Morocco’s main air hub, especially during major international events.

The digital rollout forms part of ONDA’s long-term “Décollage 2025” strategy, which aims to modernise airport operations across the country. The plan includes the development of a Digital Factory, the introduction of biometric e-gates and the use of smart monitoring systems that track airport infrastructure in real time and help prevent disruptions.

Together, these upgrades are expected to improve security, increase efficiency and enhance the overall passenger experience. As AFCON 2025 draws closer, Morocco’s move towards smarter, more connected airports signals its ambition to offer a modern travel experience that matches its growing profile as a regional and international destination.
